Reflecting on a Summer of Learning

As students settle back into their routines with the new school year, we’re reflecting on the incredible experiences and growth that took place over the summer. We understand that summer is more than just a break from school – it’s an essential time for growth, discovery, and exploration. Our K-5 Summer Enrichment program offers children the chance to keep their minds active. Research shows that students who engage in summer learning are better prepared to return to school in the fall, avoiding the “summer slide” – a common phenomenon where kids lose academic progress made during the school year.

This year, we were thrilled to enhance our K-5 summer programming with a special STEM event, thanks to a generous grant from Xcel Energy: South Dakota. With their support, we partnered with the Washington Pavilion to bring an unforgettable on-site field trip to our students – the "Fantastic Four" event. This hands-on experience introduced our young learners to the fascinating world of physics, with interactive activities focused on gravity, magnetism, push and pull, and friction.

The excitement on our students' faces was priceless as they engaged with STEM concepts in a way that made learning truly fun. These moments, where curiosity meets real-world problem-solving, are exactly why we believe in the power of summer learning and STEM education. By providing children with opportunities to explore subjects like physics in a hands-on environment, we help them build critical skills such as teamwork, creativity, and analytical thinking – skills that are essential for their academic success and future careers.

STEM programming, particularly during the summer, plays a key role in preparing students for the demands of a rapidly changing world. Our program strives to inspire a love of learning, introduce kids to potential career paths, and empower them with the tools to think critically and solve complex problems. The "Fantastic Four" event, made possible by Xcel Energy Foundation, brought these benefits to life for our students, sparking their imaginations and boosting their confidence.

Together, we’ve made STEM education not only accessible but also engaging and memorable for our kids. As we continue another school year, we look forward to seeing the continued growth of our students, enriched by the opportunities they had this summer.
